The Trek

Overview

Kedarkantha is one of the Himalayas' best-loved winter treks, and for good reason — it packs a genuine high-altitude summit, snow-draped pine and oak forests, and 360° views of peaks like Swargarohini and Black Peak into a route that's manageable for a first-timer with reasonable fitness.

The route climbs gradually from Sankri village through Juda Ka Talab, a high-altitude lake that freezes over in winter, before a pre-dawn summit push on day four. The itinerary follows a classic "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization pattern, so even though the peak sits at 12,500 ft, you're never sleeping much above 11,000 ft.

Itinerary

Pickup from Dehradun early morning and a scenic drive via Mussoorie, Kempty Falls, and the Yamuna valley into Govind National Park. Arrive at Sankri village by evening, check into the guesthouse, and get a full briefing on the days ahead. 190 km drive · 8–9 hrs · Altitude 6,400 ft
The trek starts through dense oak and pine forest on an easy-to-moderate ascent. Arrive at Juda Ka Talab, a high-altitude lake that's frozen solid through the winter months — a magical first campsite. 4 km trek · 4–5 hrs · Altitude 9,100 ft
A shorter trekking day that lets your body adjust to the altitude gain. The trail opens into meadows with Kedarkantha peak visible ahead — base camp is a superb spot for stargazing after dark. 4 km trek · 4 hrs · Altitude 11,250 ft
The big one. A pre-dawn start (around 3–4 AM) for the steep final push to the summit in time for sunrise. From 12,500 ft you get an unbroken view across Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and the Gangotri range. Descend back to base camp for lunch, then continue down to Hargaon for the night. 8 km round trip · 8–9 hrs · Peak altitude 12,500 ft
An easier descent day back through the forest to Sankri village. Evening free to relax, warm up at the guesthouse, and reflect on the summit push with the rest of the group. 4.5 km trek · 2–3 hrs
Depart Sankri after breakfast for the drive back to Dehradun, with drop-off at the railway station by evening in time for onward travel. 190 km drive · 7–8 hrs
