A frozen alpine lake, snow-draped rhododendron forests, and one of the few Himalayan winter treks that stays open all season.
Brahmatal is named after Lord Brahma, said to have meditated beside its high-altitude lake — and it's one of the few Himalayan treks that stays fully open right through peak winter, when most other routes shut down. That makes it a rare chance to camp in genuinely deep snow without a technical climb.
The route runs from Lohajung through oak and rhododendron forest to the Gujreni campsite, past the frozen Bekaltal lake, up to Tilandi Top for a first wide view of the peaks, and on to Jhandi Top and the Brahmatal summit at 12,250 ft — with Mt. Trishul, Nanda Ghunti, and Mrigthuni lined up across the horizon.
Yes — it's one of the most beginner-friendly winter treks in the Himalaya, with a well-defined trail and gradual ascent. The summit day is the most demanding stretch, but manageable with reasonable fitness.
December to March, for the full snow experience Brahmatal is known for. It's one of the few treks that stays open right through peak winter.
Daytime temperatures sit around 0–8°C, dropping to -8°C or lower at night during peak winter at the higher campsites. Proper layering is essential.
