The Trek

Overview

Kedartal is one of the most demanding short treks in the Garhwal Himalaya — a remote, high-altitude glacial lake at 16,116ft that mirrors the towering Thalaysagar peak on still mornings. Starting from the pilgrim town of Gangotri, the trail climbs fast through forest and rock-strewn moraine, with much of the route sitting above 14,000ft.

This isn't a beginner's trek. Steep ascents, a notorious rocky stretch nicknamed the "spider wall," and thin air at altitude make it best suited to trekkers who've already done at least one moderate-grade Himalayan trek. What you get in return is genuine solitude — Kedartal sees a fraction of the footfall of nearby routes — and a 360° amphitheatre of peaks including Thalaysagar, Bhrigupanth, and Meru.

Day By Day

Itinerary

A long drive along the Bhagirathi valley through Uttarkashi to Gangotri, one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage towns. Overnight stay to acclimatize and rest ahead of the trek. 250 km drive · 9–10 hrs · Altitude 3,048m
A steep forest trail climbing through pine and birch alongside the Kedar Ganga, gaining significant altitude on the very first trekking day. First taste of the terrain ahead. 8 km trek · 5–6 hrs · Altitude 3,800m
The trail leaves the treeline behind for rocky, open terrain with sweeping views of the surrounding peaks. Shorter than day 2, but noticeably tougher underfoot. 5 km trek · 4–5 hrs · Altitude 4,300m
The hardest day of the trek — a steep, rocky ascent over boulder fields and the notorious "spider wall" stretch, with loose rock and thin air making every step count. The reward is Kedartal itself: an emerald lake with Thalaysagar reflected in its still water, ringed by a 360° wall of peaks. Return to Kedar Kharak for the night. 10 km round trip · 7–8 hrs · Altitude 4,912m
Retracing the rocky trail back down, with legs feeling yesterday's climb. The terrain looks entirely different heading downhill. 5 km trek · 4–5 hrs
A long final descent back through the forest to Gangotri, with a hot meal and proper bed waiting at the end. A hot shower has rarely felt this good. 13 km trek · 7–8 hrs
Early breakfast before the long drive back to Dehradun, arriving by evening in time for onward travel. 250 km drive · 9–10 hrs

Questions

Kedartal FAQs

No — Kedartal is rated moderate to difficult and isn't a good first Himalayan trek. We recommend at least one prior moderate-grade trek (like Kedarkantha or Brahmatal) before attempting this one.

Most of the route sits above 14,000ft, the ascent is fast and sustained, and the final push to the lake crosses a steep, rocky stretch known as the "spider wall" — loose rock and thin air together make it genuinely demanding.

Mid-May to June and September to October give the clearest views and most stable weather. The monsoon months (July-August) bring landslide risk on the Gangotri road, so we avoid scheduling then.

Booking amount is non-refundable once a trek is confirmed. Cancel 30+ days before departure: 50% refund. 15–30 days before: 25% refund. Within 15 days: no refund. If Wildfern cancels a trek, you get a full refund or a free transfer to a future batch.
